Emergency Medicine Advanced Practice Provider Residency Curriculum

The Emergency Medicine Advanced Practice Provider Residency Program is a 12-month intensive clinical training and educational program administered by the Department of Emergency Medicine.

You will be a member of our emergency medicine team, working with and learning from our faculty, emergency medicine residents, and advanced practice providers. This close collaboration will give you the guidance and hands-on experience you need to become a both a competent clinician as well as a physician assistant leader in the demanding field of emergency medicine.

Upon successful completion of the program, you will be awarded a certificate from Duke University Medical Center and Duke Department of Emergency Medicine.

Clinical Scheduling

Residents will spend the majority of their time working in the main Emergency Department during the 12-month curriculum. They will work alongside staff APPs, Attending Physicians, and Resident Physicians. Residents are directly supervised by the Attending Physician that they are working alongside in the department. There will be additional resuscitation shifts, rotations in our ICU for further critical care experience, and other educational opportunities throughout the year.

As part of the clinical curriculum, you will be involved in the evaluation and management of a diverse emergency medicine population, including both adult and pediatric patients. You will care for both high and low acuity patients and gain experience in critical care, resuscitation, and trauma.

  • EM Boot Camp Course: an online comprehensive program that reviews fundamental concepts within emergency medicine practice. It provides an educational review at the beginning of your residency year.
  • ACLS, ATLS, PALS training will be offered through Duke’s Learning System. This is a requirement for your residency program year.
  • Ultrasound: a year-long curriculum to guide you in your knowledge of ultrasound and provide you with the skills necessary to perform and interpret point-of-care ultrasound examinations in your practice. You will attend educational meetings to review ultrasound scans with our ultrasound faculty.
  • Didactics: weekly in-person lectures including medical conference with the physician residents, educational seminars, journal clubs, simulations, and skills labs taught by our emergency medicine faculty and staff APPs. • Resuscitation Shifts: Designated shifts in the trauma/resuscitation area to gain experience in the principles and techniques of resuscitation and critical care management. These shifts will further focus on rapid assessment, stabilization, and treatment of patients presenting with life-threatening emergencies. You will be working on a team to actively manage these patients.
  • ICU Rotation: 2 weeks in the SICU, 2 weeks in the MICU with APPs
  • Performance Evaluation: Monitored throughout the year through evaluations by attending physicians and staff APPs, procedure logs, self-study questions.
