Sports Medicine is a dynamic subspecialty of Emergency Medicine, addressing conditions such as fractures, sprains, and joint injuries in athletes.

The Department of Emergency Medicine collaborates with the Departments of Orthopedics and Family Medicine to support the ACGME-accredited Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship

Program Highlights

  • There are three fellows a year, one of which is an Emergency Medicine residency graduate. Over the last five years, five diverse fellows have graduated and gone on to work in a variety of practices: large academic centers, suburban medical communities, and hybrid teaching facilities.
  • The EM fellow acts in the role of an attending physician in the Emergency Department during their once-a-week shift, allowing them to gain valuable clinical and teaching experience.
  • Stephen Shaheen, MD, is an attending physician in the Department of Emergency Medicine and serves as Associate Program Director of the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship, from which he graduated in 2016.
