On August 1, 2024, the Duke Department of Emergency Medicine welcomed its new Section of Emergency Medical Services and Disaster Medicine.
Led by Anjni Joiner, DO, MPH, FACEP, FAEMS, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, the section is dedicated to ensuring the delivery of exceptional local and global prehospital and disaster response through outstanding leadership, community engagement, discovery, and high-quality education.
“Our vision is to build a group of EMS and disaster medicine faculty leaders represented on a national and global scale,” Dr. Joiner said.
The section will expand upon the clinical care and quality improvement work that many of section members are engaged in. By fostering collaborative partnerships between EMS agencies, receiving healthcare systems, and community resources, the section will take a patient-centered and holistic approach to improve patient care.
The section also plans to train and mentor the next generation of EMS leaders through establishing a fellowship and through increased resident and medical student educational opportunities.
From a research perspective, the section aims to expand its reach on a global level through building and strengthening relationships with international EMS partners and programs.
