Clinical and Research Interests

My current clinical interests lie in pre-hospital emergency medicine, both in urban and austere environments. These include EMS, Disaster Medicine, Wilderness Medicine, and Search & Rescue.

Duke is among the few institutions to have direct access to hyperbaric/hypobaric medicine via our pressure chamber, so it is an ideal place to center research around either dive or high-altitude medicine.

What advice do you have for incoming interns?

"Just find where you fit in best."

This advice is applicable for both specialty selection, residency application, and eventually the type of work environment I hope to find after completing my residency training.

There are a lot of factors to consider when deciding where to prioritize your residency selection, but I would argue that your impression of how comfortable you feel with your future co-residents and attending physicians should be among the top (if not THE top).

However, "fitting in" also applies to things outside of work. Although many of your hours will be spent in the hospital, it is vital to have easy access to the things you enjoy.

What do you like best about living in Durham and the Triangle?

Durham has a ton of activity packed into a smaller city. There always seems to be a whole list of events to check out each weekend, but without the usual battle through traffic or long searches for parking I've been used to getting frustrated by while living in larger cities. Access to the outdoors is abundant and the town if very bike-friendly. There's a huge selection of food, brewery, and cocktail bar options that I've only made a small dent in so far.
