What were you looking for in a residency program?
I wanted a program with a family feel where I could feel safe asking questions. I also wanted to know that faculty had active health equity and operations projects that I could jump into as a resident.
What are the strengths of the Duke program?
We have an excellent department leadership team that is constantly working to optimize department flow to minimize boarding and backups in waiting areas. This means we get to care for a higher number of patients every shift.
There’s also great inter-professional camaraderie in the department. Residents become fast friends with nurses, techs, respiratory therapists and EVS!
Because I went to Duke for medical school, I also got to meet our senior residents when they were interns and some of our attendings when they were residents. I’ve had the privilege of being there for their transformation into total EM rockstars.
What advice do you have for incoming interns?
Wear compression socks and prioritize sleep. EMRA Cast, EM Clerkship and Divine intervention are my go-to podcasts.
What do you like best about living in Durham and the Triangle?
The semi tropical climate! I love walking around and seeing a huge array of tropical flowers, little frogs and lizards in our warmer months. Durham is also 20 minutes from the RDU airport.
What do you like to do outside of Duke?
I like to do art projects from Pinterest, update my instagram story with whatever funky creatures I see on my neighborhood walks and lift weights on my front porch.
