What were you looking for in a residency program?
I wanted a program that serves a diverse patient population and that would expose me to a wide range of emergency medicine. I think it’s important to learn how to take care of all types of patients and to be just as comfortable handling bread-and-butter cases as the more complex high-acuity ones. I also wanted to feel supported in exploring and pursuing my career interests, and to be at a program where the residents have close relationships with each other, attendings, and other team members.
What are the strengths of the Duke program?
We see a huge breadth of emergency medicine here! We see a good mix of bread and butter as well as patients with rare and complex conditions. We see a lot of high acuity patients and both medical and trauma resuscitations. I also like that we have pediatric ED shifts mixed in throughout the year. Additionally, the people here are amazing! I have learned so much already from the senior residents and attendings, and I always feel comfortable asking for help when I need it.
What advice do you have for incoming interns?
Trust yourself, but don’t be afraid to ask for help! You’re going to have a lot of autonomy and it’s important to learn how to be independent, but you also have a lot of growing to do and that’s what residency is for.
What do you like best about living in Durham and the Triangle?
All the good food!
What do you like to do outside of Duke?
Hiking, going to the gym, grabbing coffee or a drink with friends, or tending to my over 50 house plants (if you want a cutting hit me up!).
