What were you looking for in a residency program?
After doing an away rotation at Duke as a medical student, I knew it was the program for me. I knew I wanted a program with high acuity and high volume (which Duke easily delivered), but also one that would support and invest in me as an individual. In four short weeks at Duke, I was connected with mentors and opportunities that have still been fueling me to this day. Finding a program and institution supportive of couples matches was also extremely important, and Duke showed the same support for my partner that it did for me.
What are the strengths of the Duke program?
- Our program director Dr. Broder is truly one-of-a-kind. Not only is he an excellent clinician and educator, he is also a genuinely kind and compassionate human that all of us look up to.
- Duke has countless mentors and resources available for any and all interests that you may have!
- High acuity and complexity (caring for LVADs, transplant, cancer, peds complex care) while also being a Level 1 trauma center receiving transfers from a large regional catchment area
- The program is committed to growing and is always incorporating resident feedback.
- We have the opportunity to learn from experts in various fields on our off-service rotations and have a very collegial relationship with trainees from other specialties.
What advice do you have for incoming interns?
Be patient and trust the process. Soak in every high and low. You will see yourself grow so much this year. Your co-residents will be some of your best friends, cherish them!
What do you like best about living in Durham and the Triangle?
Durham is a very affordable place to live and ease of life outside of the hospital makes all the difference. It is so easy to get outside on days off and to do day-to-day tasks like groceries/errands, which seems silly but makes a huge impact during residency when time off is so precious. The Triangle has so many great restaurants and Raleigh is easy to travel in/out of making it easy to travel in and out of.
What do you like to do outside of Duke?
Working out (we have a free resident gym!), reading, trying new restaurants/breweries, exploring hiking trails, spending time with my co-residents :)
