The Physician Assistant Emergency Medicine Residency Program has a strong emphasis on both clinical and didactic training.
As part of the clinical curriculum, you will be involved in the evaluation and management of a diverse emergency medicine population, including both adult and pediatric patients. You will handle cases involving:
- Acute care
- Resuscitation
- Critical care
- Urgent clinical care
- Clinical observation unit
Additional curricular experiences include:
- Boot Camp Course: A comprehensive program aimed at familiarizing residents with the fundamental concepts, protocols, and expectations of emergency medicine practice.
- ACLS, PALS, and ATLS: Advanced life support training to support the management of acutely ill patients.
- Ultrasound: a longitudinal curriculum meant to equip PA residents with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform and interpret point-of-care ultrasound examinations commonly utilized in the evaluation and management of emergent conditions.
- Didactics: This includes a weekly in-person lecture series, educational seminars, journal clubs, simulations, and skill laboratories taught by our distinguished emergency medicine faculty.
- Airway Rotation: additional training and experience in airway management, learning from CRNAs.
- Resuscitation Shifts: Additional training in the principles and techniques of resuscitation and critical care management, with a focus on rapid assessment, stabilization, and treatment of patients presenting with life-threatening emergencies. On these shifts, the PA residents will work on a team to actively manage patients.
- Performance Evaluation: Monitored through a variety of methods including evaluations, procedure logs, and self-study questions. Residents will complete the SEMPA mid-term and final exams which will be reviewed by the Program Director. Residents will also have monthly review meetings with the Medical Director and the Program Director.
