What were you looking for in a residency program?
I was looking for a 3-year academic program that would get me exposure to the many niches of EM while challenging me with high acuity patients.
What are the strengths of the Duke program?
Crazy high acuity, super sick patients who stretch you clinically, with a ton of "special populations" exposure such as transplant + LVAD + onc patients. If you're interested in any form of research or fellowship we've got mentors galore. We've got people who will never make you feel unsupported and most importantly we've got Dr. Broder!! (Also we have incredible vibes.)
What advice do you have for incoming interns?
Join your co-residents for breakfast in the first month/bond before you go off service, take time to remember how incredible it is to have gotten to where you're at, and don't ever be scared to ask people for help!
What do you like best about living in Durham and the Triangle?
I love how easily accessible everything is, I can get pretty much anywhere within 20 mins. Food in the area is great, the nature is even better! Life is also so incredibly affordable here.
What do you like to do outside of Duke?
Read, garden, hike, hangout at coffee shops with my co-residents and pretend we'll study.
