Susan B. Promes, MD, MBA, FACEP, served as the inaugural Emergency Medicine Residency Program Director in the Duke University School of Medicine, and the director of the medical school Capstone course. Her leadership in emergency medicine education continued at the University of California San Francisco, where she served as Vice Chair of Education, residency program director, and Director of Curricular Affairs in the GME office.
As an internationally recognized leader in academic emergency medicine, Dr. Promes was chosen by the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine to be the inaugural editor of their newest journal, Academic Emergency Medicine Education and Training.
Currently, Dr. Promes serves as chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine in the Penn State College of Medicine, a role she has held since 2014. Her leadership in academic emergency medicine is significant—in 2019, the AAMC reported that only 18% of emergency medicine chairs in the United States were women.
“I look back fondly on my time at Duke University,” says Dr. Promes. “It is an honor to be a part of the Duke Emergency Medicine family. It has been such a delight to watch the Division of Emergency Medicine grow into the department it is today! Kudos to everyone that made that possible.”
