The Duke Global Health Pathway offers physicians engaged in post-graduate medical training the opportunity to broaden their existing training to address health disparities in resource-poor settings and acquire clinical and research skills relevant to careers in global health.
Eligible applicants will have completed ACGME requirements for emergency medicine and will be board eligible prior to participating in the Global Health Pathway.
Emergency Medicine residents who have successfully completed PGY-2 (of a three-year training program) are eligible to apply, with the approval of their program director. Internal and external candidates are encouraged to apply during the fall of PGY-3.
Preference will be given to individuals who have already demonstrated a commitment to address health disparities and who intend to pursue a career in global health, particularly within resource-poor settings.

Criteria for candidate selection include:
- Strong recommendation from residency program director
- Academic qualifications
- Demonstrated maturity, integrity, and cross-cultural awareness/sensitivity
- Relevance of global health training to future career plans
- Prior international experience
- Strength of personal interview
Application and Selection Process
The GHP participates in the NRMP Match Process for International Emergency Medicine Fellowship. All applicants should register with NRMP and submit application materials through the SAEM application portal.
In addition, send application materials electronically to Hubert-yeargan@dm.duke.edu. A selection committee will interview top candidates and announce appointments shortly after the application deadline.

Applicants are required to provide the following:
- Personal statement (one-to-three pages) describing your reasons for pursuing the Global Health Pathway. Please include:
- A description of any prior work/experiences overseas related to caring for underserved populations
- Personal qualities that will prepare you for this position
- How this program will help you accomplish your career goals
- Two letters of recommendation from faculty, including one from your residency program director. Faculty members should send their recommendation letters directly to Hubert-yeargan@dm.duke.edu.
