Chief Residents' Welcome

Dear Future Emergency Medicine Physicians:

Chief Residents Alaa Ousta and Cody Hill
Chief Residents Alaa Ousta and Cody Hill

Welcome to Duke Emergency Medicine, a world-class training program in a fun, warm, challenging, and supportive environment. We have an outstanding clinical curriculum that will prepare you well for any emergency medicine position you decide to pursue. Furthermore, Duke has amazing resources and opportunities to get involved in a broad spectrum of programs such as medical education, social emergency medicine, research, global health, ultrasound, EMS, hyperbaric and undersea medicine, critical care, sports medicine, and much more.

The Research Triangle area offers affordable great places to live, as well as a great food scene with plenty of restaurants. You will also have lots to explore from museums and music venues to outdoor parks and hiking trails. Our group loves to check out the Durham Bulls baseball games, Duke basketball games, art shows and concerts at the Durham Performing Arts Center, the Farmer’s Market, and the awesome food truck rodeos. With our prime location in Durham, the beach and the mountains are only a couple of hours away in either direction!

We understand that the application process can be difficult and arduous when choosing the right residency program for you, especially with virtual interviews. We have been in your shoes, and we and our program aim to make this process as easy as we possibly can. Our hope during these times is to show you the friendliness and warmth that led us all here. We can honestly say that choosing Duke Emergency Medicine was one of the best decisions we could have made, and that we are excited to be a part of this residency and the overall Duke University Health System.

If you have any questions, please, do not hesitate to reach out to us. We are always happy to tell you about the wonderful things that we are doing here at Duke. We have no doubt that you will absolutely love it here!
